Island Day and Clinical is the most-remembered day among all the students as we combine health screenings, immunizations, and health assessments at four little islands with a little beach time with our Tongan friends. A students said, "As I talked to and came to love the Tongans, I realized their financial status did not change the fact they were a mother, a father, a friend; they are all real people. It is important as a health provider to look beyond the financial status of patients and I am glad to have learned this in Tonga."”

Photo Caption: “Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation that uses the weight and height to indicate how much body fat is present in an individual. It is a method to establish who is overweight or obese; in fact, it is a valuable tool for public health. Having a correct BMI is of great benefit to health and general well being. It helps prevent diseases that can lead to premature death. By establishing a healthy lifestyle based on a balanced diet together with daily physical activity, one will find it easier to manage weight and keep a healthy BMI. Health professionals should proactively screen for and manage risk factors associated with overweight and obesity such as hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes. In Malta, Health Awareness programmes are in fact held regularly, empowering individuals and communities to change risky health behaviours.”

Photo Title: “Cosmo Newberry Community Walk’
Photo Caption:: The men, women and children walk regularly around the community, to and from the airstrip and the areas surrounding the community. The group participated in the 2010 Heart Foundation Walk and numbered 45 or more for that particular walk, completing a four kilometre trek around the community and airstrip.
The Cosmo Newberry Fitness Program encourages all community members to be involved in an activity which positively affects the whole community and includes both men, women and children and other service providers living and working in the community. This results in the whole community working together and collaborating in a positive way, encouraging members to access the health centre for positive health interventions other than attending only for acute medical care.
The community can see that results such as reduced body fat, reduced blood pressure and improved health and well being, are benefits derived from a cooperative approach to wellness. This in turn creates a good relationship with the health centre whereby community members are eager to access the service for broader and positive approached to health and well being.
The program has far reaching effects which encourages participation with other service provision in the community, such as improving school attendance and collaboration between health, education and the Cosmo Council which is led by the Indigenous leaders of the community.”

Photo Title: “High Blood Sugar”
Photo Caption: “The picture represents health promotion and prevention of high blood sugar. The lectures and the monitoring of blood sugar were held in ŠENT Novo mesto (day care centre for people with mental illnesses). ŠENT is the biggest national non profit organization where people, hospitalised because of mental illnesses like schizophrenia spend quality time. To be with other people with similar problems (depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder) helps them to be more socialised and as a consequence more mentally healthy. It is better for them to socialize rather than stay at home behind the walls.
With ŠENT mentors and our professional help they learn how to start a new life and how to stay both mentally and physically healthy. This is the main objective of Health care centre Novo mesto. We teach them about importance of healthy habits, personal hygiene, physical activity, healthy diets, etc. We also do the monitoring about high cholesterol, blood pressure and high blood sugar. Lots of them do not visit their physician. It is crucial that we can be there for them to do the check up of their physical health and help them stay complete individuals, mentally and physically healthy.”
